Froth on the Daydream
Original title: L’Écume des jours
Translation: Marek Puszczewicz
There are only two things: love, all sorts of love and the music of New Orleans or Duke Ellington. Everything else ought to go.
~ Boris Vian
Froth on the Daydream (L’Écume des jours) tells the story of the need for love that lies within each of us. Who hasn’t wished for their first love to be the one and only? Who hasn’t dreamed of a romance leading to a fairy-tale ending: “and they lived happily ever after”?
Yet Boris Vian’s world is not a fairy tale.
Although Froth on the Daydream may at first seem like an idealistic love story, its characters are ultimately confronted with an ending that is impossible to comprehend… becasue how can one explain the premature death of a loved one?
But does the end of a love story mean it was not worth living it?
„Konsternacja” jest inteligentnie napisaną i równie inteligentnie zrealizowaną komedią. Reżyser Jan Hussakowski nie próbuje tego tekstu tłumaczyć widzowi. Czyta go dosłownie, a jednocześnie konsekwentnie. To spektakl oparty na dynamice, tempie i eskalacji absurdu.

„Froth on the Daydream” succeeds above all because it is such a finely crafted example of middle-ground theatre. And honestly, there is little more to add. The Opole production is coherent, well executed, and refreshingly free of pretension. Perfect for spending an evening at the theatre and enjoying a few hours of intelligent entertainment. If something from the performance lingers with the audience afterwards, all the better, but if not, that is perfectly fine too, because theatre does not always have to save the world, fight for causes, or solemnly celebrate the virtuosity of stage stars.”

„There is something deeply empathetic about this performance, something incredibly warm and – addictive. I must admit it took me a moment to enter this slightly oneiric world, where water lilies grow in one heroine’s lungs instead of cancer. But once I stepped inside, I did not want to leave. The surrealism woven into the world of the characters became irresistibly alluring to me.”

„Froth on the Daydream” is certainly a more traditional proposal, yet its charm lies in the way it repeatedly dismantles that conventional framework while following Boris Vian’s novel. The performance was directed by the French artist Igor Mendjisky, a creator who quite clearly takes great pleasure in playing with theatre itself.”
