OPOLE DANCE STAGE
The only such unique festival dedicated to contemporary dance theatre in this part of Europe.
Opole Dance Stage is a showcase of Polish performances in the field of contemporary dance, as well as an opportunity to explore intriguing works from abroad. We present the most exciting dance and performance productions to both Opole’s and Poland’s audiences, featuring emerging and established artists working at the intersection of dance and performance. The program is complemented by contextual and educational events, such as lectures, dance workshops, and meetings with creators.
The idea for this festival was born during the pandemic as a way to support independent artists who were left without institutional backing during this difficult time. However, this was not the only reason. As the JK Opole Theatre expanded its program to embrace a “theatre of many voices and different perspectives,” it became evident that incorporating performative arts was a natural next step. The approach we adopted—conducting workshops with our entire acting ensemble and integrating professional dancers and performers into productions—allowed us to introduce a new working model to the institution. This model reshaped traditional production and curatorial pathways, fostering a more interdisciplinary artistic process.
JK Opole Theatre primarily focuses on socially engaged theatre and dramatic narratives. However, as a key cultural institution in the Opole region, it also bears the responsibility of showcasing a diverse range of theatrical and performative phenomena, including contemporary dance. Our goal is to provide audiences with a comprehensive and inclusive perspective on the latest forms of stage expression, free from genre or geographical limitations.
Past editions of Opole Dance Stage have demonstrated that contemporary dance enjoys great popularity among Opole audiences. In response to this interest, we strive to create new contexts for dance presentations and foster creative opportunities for the choreographic community.
We hope that the festival’s format will inspire long-term engagement with dance and choreography. We aim to provide audiences with an intimate connection to this art form, offering them a glimpse behind the scenes of the creative process and inviting them to join us in discovering new pathways of artistic expression.
