DEMONS

A critically acclaimed play telling the story of a group of Spanish revolutionaries fighting against General Franco’s regime. Their main weapon was to stage the „Los Endemoniados” in a small town in the south of Spain. Opole actors and actresses reconstruct this story, creating highly believable characters in a spectacular, ensemble-based performance.

It is 1973 and General Franco’s regime is coming to an end, but the tormented Spaniards see no chance of improving their lot. In their country, the truth is uncomfortable. Questions are suppressed about the fate of loved ones who died during the civil war and under the regime, or were captured and transported to secret prison facilities. The nation chokes, silently, and a lump grows in the throats of hot-blooded Spaniards.

In these circumstances, a group of young revolutionaries begin to create their own adaptation of „Los Endemoniados” – furious, frenzied, full of fire, arising from the need to say something when nothing can be uttered. As they work, the participants become radicalised and dream of becoming more and more active in their fight against the system. Little do they know that they will become victims of their own ambitions. During the premiere of the play, the theatre burns down and the creators and the audience trapped in the building are killed in the fire.

“Wierzchowski and his team tell the story of the dream that is art, and the community that is born between people undertaking this dream together.”

“This theatre is more than a stage show – it is a reconstruction of a tragedy, the repetition of which opens the door to an alternative course of events. It is theatre that leaves hope.”

Piotr Dobrowolski, Miesięcznik Teatr

“The young actors (Magda Maścianica, Maria Kuśmierska, Jakub Klimaszewski, Kacper Sasin, Konrad Wosik) are rebellious, open to any change, and as a result bring a lightness and uncompromisingness to the story.”

Monika Morusiewicz, Dziennik Teatralny Opole

“They are all delightful. We would have to rewrite the whole placard with names. You know that this being on stage comes at a price; it’s a matter of getting into your intimacy.”

Jakub Moroz, e-teatr.pl

„(…) potrafi rozśmieszyć, a nieraz też skłonić do refleksji. Działa jak dobrze skrojone kino gatunkowe, z rozwiązaniami z którymi teatr, moim zdaniem, mógłby częściej eksperymentować”.
