CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF

Families look their best only in pictures. Reality is often worse.
So let’s be gracious and take a look at a family photo of the largest cotton grower family in the Mississippi Delta. We see a postured, determined father, an attentive mother, two handsome sons with beautiful wives and five cheerful, lively grandchildren – with a sixth on the way.
But what lies behind this facade?

A masterpiece of contemporary drama, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof tells the story of one night, during which the masks suddenly drop and all the lies and prejudices, secrets and suspicions that have hitherto held the family together become palpable. And then, instead of a beautiful idyll, the family picture begins to show the fear of admitting one’s sexual orientation, the closing of eyes to a child’s alcoholism, the hatred and grief that rolls down all the branches of this genealogical tree.

The play is a vivisection of the process of inheriting traumas, lies, (co)addictions and all the things we can get as a family inheritance, even if no one bequeaths it to us in their will.

Ogólnopolski Konkurs na Wystawienie Polskiej Sztuki Współczesnej ma na celu nagradzanie najciekawszych poszukiwań repertuarowych w polskim teatrze, wspomaganie rodzimej dramaturgii w jej scenicznych realizacjach oraz popularyzację polskiego dramatu współczesnego. Konkurs organizowany jest przez Ministerstwo Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego oraz Instytut Teatralny im. Zbigniewa Raszewskiego w Warszawie.
