GROTOWSKI NON-FICTION
„Grotowski Non-Fiction” is a project inspired by the life and work of Jerzy Grotowski who created the famous Theatre of 13 Rows in Opole and the Laboratory Theatre in Wrocław. Grotowski is drama’s cult figure. How, then, to find the truth in such a mythological perception of the creator? Is it even possible to get to the truth about the man on the basis of preserved memories and traces? The task becomes even more difficult when we realise that the people involved in the project have never seen any of Jerzy Grotowski’s plays live.
This is a play, which focus on creating memories. A key element of this experimental work is an attempt to recreate the figure of Grotowski himself through the comments, opinions, memories and imagination and fantasy of the actors, who – perversely – become directors and researchers of the subject, involving the audience in an unusual reconstruction work. In the course of the work on the project, a book on Grotowski written from the actors’ perspective was created, and the performance is followed by an exhibition by Zbigniew Libera.

“Photoperformances” (the term comes from the show’s creators) by Zbigniew Libera will prove to be one of the ways in which the performance by Kalwat will break down the doors of the theatre, creating a separate portal to access the theatrical guru, and thus – broadening the audience’s perception.

The performance took part in the 25th National Competition for the Exhibition of Polish Contemporary Art.
The National Competition for the Exhibition of Polish Contemporary Art aims to reward the most interesting repertoire searches in Polish theatre, supporting native dramaturgy in its stage realizations and to popularizing Polish contemporary drama. The Competition is organised by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute in Warsaw.
In the first stage of the Competition, the performances are evaluated by the Artistic Committee consisting of: Dominik Gac, Andrzej Lis, Henryk Mazurkiewicz, Piotr Morawski, Jacek Sieradzki, Sandra Szwarc and Zuzanna Berendt.
The production was co-produced with Wrocław Contemporary Theatre.
